Springtime In Great Britain
Great Britain is one of the most beautiful places in the world year-round, but nothing compares to the British springtime!
Warmer temperatures begin to roll in, pushing away the winter’s cold. This wonderful change of weather, eagerly anticipated by everyone, paves the way for rebirth, renewal, joy, and sunshine!
Everything comes to life and welcomes this gorgeous time of year!
When is Springtime in the UK and Why is it Special?
Springtime in Great Britain officially starts on the 1st of March and lasts until the 31st of May. The Easter holiday, the 4th of April, is celebrated during this time by Christians who rejoice at the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
On Easter Sunday children eagerly anticipate the gifts they receive usually including huge Chocolate Eggs wrapped in shiny vibrant papers, and other sweets, that remind everyone of the birth of Springtime animals, birds, and plants.
When I was young the custom was to boil our eggs until they were hardboiled but to put leaves, flowers, or berries in the water so that the eggs came out with beautiful colored shells. Nowadays, you can buy a kit of vegetable dyes to use instead.
However, nothing beats the memories of using brown onion skins in the pot with the eggs, and then finding lovely rusty brown orangey eggs when hardboiled and dry. It was like Easter magic!
You may be wondering what happened to the eggs after that – well we played rolling games with them – down grassy slopes – to see whose egg rolled the farthest. And we even ate some of them!
Easter In The UK
There was no Easter Bunny in Britain when I was young – but today’s kids expect an Easter Egg Hunt since American Customs crossed the pond!
Another important event in the spring months is British Mother’s Day, Sunday March 14th. In America, the date is different and comes May 9th.
One of the reasons the date is different is that Easter is dependent on the lunar calendar, which is different each year in the UK. The UK’s Mother’s Day always falls on the fourth Sunday during the period of Lent, when people typically give up things like certain foods or bad habits for the days leading up to Easter.
No matter in which country you are living, Mother’s Day is always meant as a celebration of Mothers and all they do for everyone. Children make cards, little presents and perhaps make breakfast in bed as a treat for their mother. Often families go out for lunch or do something special for mum/mam or mom!

Farmers are very busy as it is lambing time. When travelling around the countryside everything is becoming a verdant green and the little lambs are scampering across the fields and meadows.
The farmers’ fields and meadows blossom with colors of yellow, pinks, and blue. It seems that everyone is at the garden center buying plants for their spring gardens. Not only are the gardens coming to life – but the British people too!
This is the perfect time for traveling, exploring, planting, and enjoying the beautiful blooming Topography of Great Britain.
What is Springtime Like in the UK?
Though spring in Great Britain offers warmer weather, it is not summer-time temperatures. Spring in the UK is not cold consistently like during the winter season but can have its chilly, windy days.
And as the children’s rhyme says, April Showers bring forth May Flowers.
Britain has a temperate climate which means cold winters and warm wet summers- but no extreme temperatures. Springtime has the possibility of being really cold with even snow and at other times quite hot and balmy breezes!
The thing is Britain’s weather can change 3 times in a day. With being an island surrounded by seas it is difficult to predict from the beginning of the day to the end.
One thing is certain though, you will need an umbrella!
The spring showers enable displays of beautiful trees and plants emerging from March to May in Great Britain. For many people, their favourite memories are of Spring in UK.
Spring is a very special season as life all around is awakening and also the desire to be outside, walking, gardening, cycling, boating, sailing, and climbing. – Yes – you can do all of these in springtime in Britain.
